gn - gait number
The gait number used by the macro language to identify a specific gait. Only the first eight (normal plus special gaits 1-7) are used in C1: all fifteen are used in C2.
g# - gait sequence
These appear to be references to the poses to move through for the particular gait sequence. The 'fear' and 'drunken stagger' gaits use all eight - the other gaits only use the first four. See the Poses page for a complete listing of the poses by number.
general observations
The Genetics Preview Kit Reference Guide says that "Different poses switch on at different times to replace these with 'older looking' walking sequences as the creature ages." This switch must occur outside the gait gene itself, obviously, as these all have an 'embryo' switch on time.

The C1 'nornal' gait - only uses four of the eight available gait sequence characters.

The C1 'drunken stagger' gait - note the repetition and doubling back of sequence markers. :-)
